One day for one migrant worker

The hole in the migrant worker system in India was made evident by the current pandemic. Millions were left jobless and shelterless overnight. Migrant daily wage workers were especially hurt by the lockdown, which effectively eliminated any employment or income they had. Hungry and desperate, these people were forced to walk back home (sometimes over 500-750kms) to their villages because they could not afford transportation via bus or train. Pregnant women, families with small children, and people with disabilities all found themselves in this situation - walking along dangerous highways with little to no food or water. Many have died on their journeys because of dehydration and accidents. Thousands more are stuck in limbo in makeshift shelters in urban areas, waiting for the government to arrange their transportation home. While they wait, they have limited access to food, water, and personal protective equipment. Social distancing protocol is also impossible to maintain in these shelters. The status of these migrant workers is precarious - without our help, they face starvation, dehydration, lack of shelter, unemployment, loss of dignity, and a deadly virus.
With this fundraising campaign "One day for one migrant worker", we pledge our 1 working day of each month to support a migrant worker's family.
Through your donation, we can support a migrant worker family in India survive the pandemic with essentials such as food and hygiene products. Your donation can also go towards supporting small entrepreneurship initiatives by these migrant workers who now find themselves unemployed. Remember:
- Any contribution can aid the cause
- Our 1 working day can support a migrant family's needs for 1 month
- Our 1 working day can aid to start a micro-small scale business for a migrant worker - aiding long term sustenance of a migrant family
Below you can find information about the 2 initiatives.
1. Emergency support: An emergency kit with essentials that 1 family of 3 would need to survive for a month. The kit includes food and hygiene products.
Target: Provide 200 migrant families with essential support for 1 month each.
2. Entrepreneurship support: Establishing self-sustaining support for migrant families by providing them seed funding to start their own small-scale business ventures. This ensures that unemployed migrant workers have the opportunity to build a long-term sustainable initiative with your support.
Target: Provide long-term employment and sustenance 50 migrant families
