Omar Melgoza-Cortes Funeral and Memorial Costs

After the fight for his life against cancer for a year and a half, Omar Melgoza-Cortes died and the world lost an incredible person, family member, brother, son, husband, and a friend. No words can describe the tragedy that Omar and his family had to experience from seeing his mother pass away from cancer, being diagnosed with cancer 4 months after losing his mom, enduring the fight for his life for a year and a half, and his untimely death.
In lieu of this tragedy please join me in supporting Omar’s family in the financial burden by raising funds to pay for the funeral, memorial, and remaining costs. Anything you can do to help them offset the cost during this hardship is greatly appreciated. I urge you and make this call to action to donate as much as you possibly can, to share this with your online social and professional network, at work, at school, with your family to reach our goal and support Omar’s family.

Omar Melgoza-Cortes, 26 years old, died on June 3, 2019 at Mission Hospice.
Born in Michoacán, Mexico to a loving family, Omar moved to Watsonville, California after he was born. Since his youth, Omar enjoyed learning new things and teaching others. In high school Omar excelled academically while also playing football and lacrosse. He graduated salutatorian from Watsonville High School.
He graduated UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in Evolution, Behavior and Ecology and minor in Psychology. At UCSD, Omar was a leader always searching for a way to have a positive impact. In college Omar was a founding brother of Lambda Theta Phi at UCSD, worked to retain Latinx students academically through MEChA de UCSD as the academic responsable, and regularly volunteered through a community service organization he started known as the Gentlemen and Scholar’s Service Club. While being a leader, Omar also became a role model, supporting younger first generation college students of color traverse college, volunteering in several SPACES college access programs, working to become an ally by attending Social Justice workshops and hanging out at the Cross-Cultural Center all while playing for the UCSD Rugby team, consistently studying hard at Geisel Library, and working at the UCSD Bookstore.
After graduating Omar spent several months working with children with Autism at California Psychcare, before moving back home to support his mother through her battle against cancer. After returning to Watsonville Omar accepted a job at Driscoll’s to support at home. He became well educated on Driscoll’s berries and well-loved in the Driscoll’s community.
In September 10 2017, Omar’s mother, Cecilia Cortes Melgoza died from cancer. Soon thereafter, Omar was diagnosed with cancer in January 2018. His battle was difficult, but his hope and motivation persevered. His positivity and generosity shined wherever he went. At Stanford Hospital and Cancer Center, Omar was known as someone extremely positive, always smiling, encouraging and thanking other cancer patients and medical staff around him. Even through the most painful times, he smiled and fought. He touched so many lives through his caring and humble nature. Our lives and this world will never be the same without him. His laughter, his smile, his wisdom, his open-mindedness, his kindness filled our hearts and he will be greatly missed.
Omar is survived by his wife Damitu Beyene, his father Rigoberto Melgoza, his sister Maria Vianney Melgoza-Cortes, his niece and nephew.
