Support for Families from Odette (Rai)

By Joanna Arong (based in the Philippines)

It's been heartbreaking to see the damage super typhoon Odette (Rai) has wreaked throughout the Visayas and northern Mindanao since it barreled through the country last Thursday. Disturbing images have been slowly filtering in since most places lost electricity (may take a month to recover electricity for many places), including photos of deceased mothers, fathers and children. These ever devastating storms are recurring so frequently and are ever stronger now.  This time it's affected so many people I know all across the region. Where to even begin.

SUPPORT FOR THREE FAMILIES INVOLVED IN OUR POST-DISASTER FILMS
The devastation is extensive, and as Christmas is fast approaching, we thought we would focus and seek support to help three families we know directly. These three families lost their homes, or had extensive damage to their homes, and are struggling to buy basic needs such as drinking water .

In the last years, my film on the devastation from super typhoon Haiyan from 2013 (To Calm the Pig Inside) has been traveling the film festival circuit. I talk about how everyone I knew from my home town, Cebu, came together to help in any way they could. The tables have now turned with Odette, and now it seems every single person I know in Cebu has been affected by the unexpected sudden ferocious turn from this typhoon. People were caught unprepared, and now there are long lines for gas, groceries, ATMs and even drinking water. Some friends are telling me they're now hustling just to find some drinking water.

In the last years, we made three short post disaster films in Bohol, Tacloban and Guiuan. The films have now come full circles as many involved in our films are now victims from this latest calamity, and desperately need some assistance.

JUVEL ALVAREZ | Talisay, Cebu
Juvel Alvarez, worked with us in Bohol and Guiuan as Grip and also worked as one of two production assistants on our work chasing typhoons for another foreign production (Ouragan / Hurricane 2015) in Tacloban, Legazpi, Guiuan and Palawan.

Juvel's house in Talisay, Cebu was blown away last Thursday.

VINCENT & SHELLA | AMANDA & WILLIAM | Tubigon, Bohol
The second extended family we would  like to support is the family of Vincent Lebita and Shella Tuquib.

Vincent and Shella were extras on our film GABBY where they took on the role of volunteers helping in the aftermath of the earthquake in Bohol. Their mother's house where their children live, was flattened from the fallen trees, and they lost everything they owned.

Vincent's sister and brother, Amanda & William, also played in our film (in fact his younger brother William first inspired the idea of the film as I saw this young boy volunteering after the Bohol earthquake). Amanda's grandfather's house, where she resides, was washed out, being so close to the sea.

ANJ & SHUN BACALLA
The third family we'd like to support is the family of Gracie Anjelo Bacalla. Anj is the mother of Shun, one of the main children in our film, GABBY.  Anj was very supportive of our film, also taking care of the main child actors in our film.  Although her house was not totally destroyed, they're now struggling with buying drinking water, as the prices have surged, and she's supporting an extended family of elderly and children.

BACKGROUND ON ODETTE (RAI)
Last Thursday, Odette made a total of nine landfalls, wreaking so much havoc in its wake.  Most people are now struggling and are in need of relief and assistance.

SPIRIT OF THE OLD FOOL
To help raise funds, we thought we could share the spirit of the old fool of endurance in the face of adversity from our film The Old Fool Who Moved the Mountains. It's going to take a lot of determined old fools to face this calamity, as well as to help the Philippines to recover again.

In 2013 after the devastating earthquake in Bohol as well as the onslaught of Super typhoon Haiyan, most took to wearing the slogan #Bangon (To Rise). And once again, we are seeing this slogan across the country #BangonPhilippines
