In September 2020, Mike Hayes of the North Fayette Township Police Department was experiencing sickness and discomfort in his abdominal area, to such a degree it caused him to seek emergency medical attention.  During the process, Mike was advised he was presenting with abnormal lab results and he was deferred to an oncologist.  Within days, Mike was informed that he has Stage 4 colon cancer, which metastasized to his liver.  After dozens of tests and scans, Mike and his family decided that he would follow the recommended treatment to prolong his quality of life.  There was no definitive answer as to his prognosis.

Mike is a lifelong resident of North Fayette Township, and a 1990 graduate of West Allegheny High School.   After obtaining his diploma, Mike attended the Allegheny County Police Training Academy, earning his Act 120 in the Spring of 1991.  Over the next several years, Mike worked in several police department in Beaver County including Monaca and Midland Borough and Hanover and Raccoon Township.  In 1996, Mike was hired with the North Fayette Township Police and promoted to full time status in 1997.  He married the love of his life, Jenin 1996 and they have two wonderful children, Courtney (21) and Michael Jr (16)

During Mike’s career in North Fayette, he rose from Patrolman to Corporal, then ultimately to his current rank of Sergeant.  Mike served as the Firearms Instructor for more than 10 years and ran numerous community outreach programs.  Two which garnered particular praise and made significant impact were the “Ladies’ Firearms Class” and “Refuse to be a Victim”.  These courses empowered those in attendance with confidence and stability and remain a staple of our community-oriented policing model.  For the last six years Mike served as the School Resource Officer at his alma matter, West Allegheny High School, and is the Vice President of the PA SRO Association.  Mike has changed the lives of countless students with his positive attitude and encouraging demeanor and has been a true asset to the school district and police department.
