Brenna takes on South Africa!

Donation protected
Hi, family, friends, bandmates, cat lovers, teachers, community members, various people I've come across in life and strangers!

In September, I started attending Shoreline Community College. Moving out was a strange thing -- I went from Arlington, where running into my kindegarten teacher at ten o'clock at night while buying a gallon of milk was a commonality, to Seattle, where I was too afraid to leave my house and buy milk because it would mean 1.) spending money and 2.) riding the bus in the dark. Since then, I have mastered the tricks of the bus system and am comfortable with riding it at night. It took the drastic change of places for me to face my fears of the dark.

A few weeks ago, the opportunity to study abroad was brought to my attention, and nothing has EVER felt as right to me than envisioning myself immersed in the culture in South Africa. If moving 45 minutes south helped me to grow exponentially, I can only imagine what staying on the other side of the world for several weeks will do for me. It's daunting to think about, but I feel so ready for the challenge.

For several weeks prior to actually embarking on the journey to Africa, I will be attending an African Cultures prep class, but the 10 credits I'm receiving will be based on the program in Cape Town.

We'll be looking at the social and cultural history of South Africa, and its current efforts to create a more multicultural and democratic nation.

We'll learn about apartheid, meet with Nelson Mandela's cousin who is a chief of one of the townships, and even do a few nights of a home stay in the townships.

We'll participate in social and historical lectures, visit with elementary-high school kids, journey to the Cape of Good Hope, and meet with the land penguins.

I plan on taking thousands of photos and videos to document everything, to make a mini-documentary at the end of the trip.

I can't do this alone, so I ask you, my undying supporters who have helped me through life more than I could ever thank you for, to help me make this possibility a definitive thing.

If any of you have the desire to donate, picture me hugging you and jumping around and crying out of gratitude. Because that's what I'll do when I see you.

Thank you so, so much. Again, I will explain in further detail the basis of the trip tonight and keep you all updated!
