Natasha is a vibrant, humble and beautiful 39 year-old gal who was diagnosed in January 2015 with breast cancer, stage III.
Natasha is a Cuban girl who once left the island thinking of a better future for her family and herself. She lived in Spain for almost 14 years working extremely hard and succeeding at getting her entire family (including a 85 year-old grandmother) out of Cuba's dictatorship. Her struggle was just amazing, and when she thought she could take a deep breath and relax, the Spanish economy collapsed, and she lost her job and dreams altogether.
In 2013, she applied for a Phd. Candidate position at various universities in the United States, and was accepted at the University of Houston in Texas. Since then, she has been working extremely hard in order to pass all her courses with outstanding grades, a task that she has accomplished. She has served as a Teaching Assistant at UH teaching Spanish to a wide number of undergraduate students and future professionals in the community.
Natasha was ready this January to finish her credits at the University of Houston, finish her dissertation in the near future and look for a position as a professor in the job market.
However this disease has put all these dreams, once more, on hold.
Natasha needs your help in order to continue her expensive treatment. She has recently had surgery, but she will need months of chemotherapy and radiation to survive this disease. Her treatments are covered in part by the health insurance provided by UH for graduate students, but still the co-payments and deductibles are impossible for her to pay on a graduate student TA salary.
