We need your help to open doors for the Deaf Community and improve access music and entertainment.
There is a huge gap in the music and entertainment industry regarding access provision for the Deaf community in New Zealand. Deaf people continue to face barriers and discrimination on a daily basis and have not been given the opportunities and acknowledgement they so rightly deserve.
Performance Interpreting Ltd provide Sign Language Interpreters and Deaf performers for the music and entertainment industry in the UK. We are a small company who have made huge progress in opening doors to Deaf customers to the music and entertainment industry.
We want to share our access model and training with sign language interpreting professionals, access / disability organisations and entertainment establishments in New Zealand, in the hope we can help to improve access for the Deaf community in NZ.
We are providing free training to New Zealand Sign Language Interpreters on the 2nd March 2019 in Auckland. However there are considerable costs to set this up. We are hoping to raise money to cover some of the expenses involved to provide the training day in New Zealand example; 2 x trainers flights / training venue costs.
For organisations involved in Access / Disability / Arts/ Government / NZSL Interpreting / Music and Entertainment we are also offering to provide presentations and free consultation, this is to share our knowledge and experience of improving access for the Deaf Community within the music and entertainment industry. (Available for face to face meetings/presentations between 26th Feb - 1st March 2019. We can also offer ongoing support / guidance and consultation).

When access is permitted it is often done so reluctantly, it is not widely advertised, left unregulated and is often of an inadequate standard. Thus Deaf people are left with a substandard restrictive experience. Training in this specific field has not been available until now. An Introduction to Music Interpreting intends to ensure Interpreters develop the skills to ensure Deaf audiences will experience high quality equal access
Misconceptions and lack of understanding surrounding Deaf people are key factors to inadequate access.
Performance Interpreting aims to raise awareness, improve access standards and promote inclusion. Many service providers make assumptions Deaf people cannot appreciate music because it is assumed they cannot hear it. The world of music is not closed if you are deaf. Individuals have varying degrees of hearing loss, many deaf people can hear the music but cannot access the lyrics, some use their hearing aids to amplify the sound, whilst others experience music through vibration. Music is felt on a physical level by everyone it is an emotional catharsis, a way to connect to people. Combining this with accessing Music through their preferred language; New Zealand Sign Language, deaf people can enjoy music on an equal footing.
An Artist’s gift is to entertain us with their talent, to stimulate our senses. By providing Performance Interpreters, Deaf Sign Language customers are given an opportunity to come together with family and friends to share in the magic. Performance Interpreting is creative, reflective and dynamic. It liberates the audience to feel completely in the moment, capturing the very essence of the experience. A true reflection of music and language expressed with soul, passion and understanding.
