Help 5 students go to NYU!

Five students are daring to dream.  These students applied and were accepted to the Looking for Shakespeare program with New York University. They will live in the dorms, eat in the cafeteria, go to classes, attend workshops and lectures and live their Summer as an NYU college student. At the end of their term, they will perform a full length Shakespearean play for the public and the faculty of the Steinhardt School.

One future NYU college student spoke of this experience and said, "It is a dream of mine to become a part of this place, a place where I will be exposed to the highest professional and top quality work. I know this experience will impact me and push me towards my future of success. A class, a show, or a moment in New York City is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I hope will not pass me by."

My students are at one of the highest at-risk schools in Dallas. They make decisions every day of their life about drugs, gangs and relationships. In the middle of the most desperate situations you will find the most resilient and kind young people. Another future NYU college student learned English three years ago and is now an A- B student in his AP and Pre-AP classes. He loves Shakespeare and devours every play I give him. He speaks of his love for Shakespeare's work and says, "I love reading Shakespeare because it is like learning another new language and I like the challenge."

We have the power to push students who have doubted their own worth and potential up the mountain. It is my desire that they arrive in New York and suddenly  realize that their highest and most far away goal is within their grasp. I hope then that they will realize they need to dream bigger than they ever imagined possible. This starts with one child having a dream and one person like you to say, "I believe in your dream."

NYU  Looking For Shakespeare Program Description

An intensive Shakespeare summer program for high school students from around the country. This program is unique in that ensemble members work with a director, production team, and graduate assistants to mount a fully produced Shakespeare play on the campus of NYU. Participants investigate how Shakespeare’s language resonates for them, within their own personal experiences. The production is supported by designers and stage managers and is documented by a video artist. The 2015 play will be Hamlet.

This program will run for four weeks—June 29th through July 25th. The program primarily runs Monday through Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm, but there are at least two Saturday rehearsals as well as evening performances in the final week.  The experience culminates in four public performances.
