Hello, my name is Rafael Sanguinetti. I am a grade 11 student currently enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme. I have been passionate about becoming a medical doctor and specialize in surgery for many years and fortunately I have been given the opportunity to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference, where I will enroll in their medicine program to experience what it is like to be a doctor on a first-hand basis.
I am a Peer Tutor at my school, where I assist other students in understanding and overcoming problems they may have in mathematics or sciences I also volunteer at the YMCA where I coach basketball to children aged 9-13 years old. I carry out these activities as I enjoy helping others out and fulfilling a leadership role. Also, I am taking a Japanese language course outside of school as my family has hosted Japanese exchange students in the past, so I wish to be able to speak to them in Japanese. I am currently in my third year of Japanese studies, and I enjoy learning about Japan and its culture.
I personally like to think that I am an excellent student. For instance, I have achieved honor roll throughout all my years in school, my grades are consistently above average, I study rigorously everyday, I am always willing to learn new things and improve from my mistakes. In fact, I was placed in the 95th percentile in the PSAT, an SAT preparation test given to students around the world, which is how I managed to get invited to attend the NSLC.
Unfortunately, my family and I cannot currently pay for the tuition cost of the NSLC program. My parents were both oil & gas workers and due to the recent recession that has impacted the industry worldwide, my parents were left unemployed and since then my family has been struggling to find employment and pay bills. The current cost of the tuition is around $3500 CAD, including flight expenses and travel costs (food, transportation, extra expenses).
Fortunately, I have received a $750 USD scholarship from the NSLC, which has reduced the total costs of this experience. However, I still need a lot more funding to cover the remaining costs.
With your help, I intend to raise money to pay off the remaining costs (~$3500 CAD) for the trip.
Any contribution, whether big or small, is greatly appreciated by myself and by my family. We truly thank you for your tremendous generosity.
