Not your typical charity...
In fact, it's not even truly public - and it's also not tax deductible.
I'm only posting this to my friends on Facebook. As my friends, you know this is totally not my style. Generally speaking I like to do nice deeds for charity and for people without making any noise about it - I figure that if I make much noise, I lose whatever karma I get from doing the nice thing in the first place. Is that crazy? Probably...
In any event, I know a family who I will not mention who has recently lost their home and is living in what would never pass muster in the Cub Scouts as a tent (it's made from tarps, etc.). I'm planning to help them in stages to build something very modest which will at least get them onto an actual floor and with an actual roof over their heads. I was and am still planning to do this, regardless of the outcome of this GoFundMe. But a few minutes ago I saw a picture of my late mom and my youngest son in one of those "Facebook Memories" from a decade ago, and I felt inspired to let my friends know about this in as sketchy a way as possible (to keep from embarrassing the family in question), on the off chance that any of you would want to help. In my mind, that's what today and tomorrow (Christmas) are all about.
I'll tell everyone who's interested how things progress on the building of the shelter for this poor family, and will post pictures online in this forum (I'm unsure how these 'gofundme' forums work - as I said, this was inspired moments ago and isn't something I normally do).
I'll also match every donation we raise, up to half of the goal.
Thanks for considering this - and have a wonderful Christmas season and an outstanding 2018.
Mike
