North American Freeride Ski Championship

Many of you are close friends, family, and part of my amazing community in Telluride. For those of you who don’t know me I’m Lily Young a 15 year old freeride skier.  I have been skiing steep powder since I was 3 months old attached to my dad in a baby bjorn. Lots of ski days followed.  From 10 to 13 I competed in Freestyle bump skiing.  Last winter I moved on to compete in Big Mountain Freeride.  Until last year I didn’t even know that there were Freeride events I could compete in, not to mention win! After my first comp at Snowbird last year I was hooked. It was my favorite type of skiing and I got to compete. It was a whole new world.  At Aspen Highlands I got my first ever first place. When they called my name for top of the podium I was surprised, then I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day. This is my second year of freeride and it's better than the first one. Now I have a great team and I’ve been pushing myself  every day.  This season I moved up to the 15-18 division.   I didn’t expect that I would make it to the North American Championships because I was the youngest in my age group.  This Monday when I found out I made it into NorAms as one of the top 25 Freeride skiers in North America I started to cry I was so happy. I did not anticipate placing in the top 10 at all my events this winter so I have not had time to save money for this trip. The competition is next week April 10th, 11th, and 12th. I will ski stronger knowing that all of your love and support helped to get me to Kicking Horse Canada to compete at the North American Championships.  Freeride Tutorial: Freeride skiing is a judged sport that centers around skiing varying and challenging terrain and choosing a solid line that makes use of natural rock and snow features to ski/jump off. Points are given for control, technique, style, fluidity, and individuality!
