Nootka's Medical Bills

Donation protected
This is Nookta, an 8 week old Rottweiler Husky mix who was rescued from the Tofino Reservations (Tla-O-Qui-Aht First Nations) about a week ago. Her vet and her owner started to notice changes in her attitude and how tired she was. The vet diagnosed Nootka with Parvo (Canine Parvovirus) which is an aggressive highly contagious virus that causes lethargy; loss of appetite; abdominal pain and bloating; fever or low body temperature (hypothermia); vomiting; and severe, often bloody, diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

Her vet bills to date are already over $1,200 dollars and her owner is unable to cover the costs of ongoing medical bills.

Nootka is currently on IV fluids, anti-nausea medication and antibiotics to keep her comfortable and hydrated however her road to recovery has only just started, and she has a very long way to go until she will be healthy again. When a dog develops parvo, treatment can be very expensive. Early recognition and aggressive treatment are very important in successful outcomes. With proper treatment, survival rates can approach 90%. The virus is not easily killed, and Nootka will have to be on a special diet for the rest of her life.

Nootka got Parvo from her mother.  To Prevent parvovirus having your dog vaccinated and maintaining good hygiene are critical components of prevention. Unfortunately because Nootka's mom and dad were never properly cared for on the reserves, her and all her siblings were exposed to the virus and have all fallen quite ill. Young puppies are very susceptible to infection, particularly because the natural immunity provided in their mothers' milk may wear off before the puppies' own immune systems are mature enough to fight off infection.

Most deaths from parvo happen within 48 to 72 hours after the symptoms begin, and Nootka is fighting for her life but needs help covering expenses, anything helps and we thank you for your support.
