This past year has been one of major transitions: 6 months in America after being gone for 2 years, new baby, new apartment and moving away from some of our previous responsibilities to take on new ones.
Up until now the family basically went everywhere together because Lilitha was small, and an only child, and the project that took most of our time was one we did together as a couple.
When we arrived in South Africa after having been away for 6 months some friends loaned us their car that they'd been planning to sell. They continued to allow us to use it until they said they'd like to sell it to us.
We have a car but, as we explained above, we also have two children now, one who's in play school 3 days a week, and that project we were running together is the one we are transitioning out of.
Alex has been putting most of her energy towards her organization, Her Voice, and Odwa is more focused on his new community coffee shop project and Cafe Fusion/The Artist Society.
This is where the second car has really shown it's value. Some mornings Odwa needs to travel into town for meetings while Alex is busy with the young mothers in the township. We are often passing eachother from point A to point B to hand off one or both of the kids. If Lili is sick Alex can take her to the doctor while Odwa goes with Noni to a youth session. You get the idea.
But, this car does not only transport our family.
It takes young mothers and their children home after Tuesday night small group when we get out late and the township has become too dangerous to walk.
It rushes women in labor to the hospital.
It carries young men who have been previously mentored by American hip-hop music videos to go see people who they SHOULD be looking up to speaking positivity through poetry and spoken word in Cape Town.
It carries a young man who has no parents, who was destined to be stuck in poverty forever because of his circumstances, who pushed himself THAT hard to where he has high enough grades to apply for a University to that school's open day.
The reality, it would have been impossible to accomplish as much as we have in the last 4 months if we'd only had one car.
So the car is here and we are overwhelmed with gratitude. But we still need to pay for it.
We would like to be able to pay the car off by the end of August.
$5000 would be more than enough to cover the cost of the car and some minor repairs needed.
We are extremely grateful for your generosity, support and prayers as we have grown in our work in South Africa. We thank you ahead of time for the contributions towards this car that really gives us so much more capacity to complete the tasks we have on our hearts for the people we love so much in Kayamandi and still care for our family well.
Whether it's $5 or $500 it matters. No gift is too small and all gifts are appreciated.
