Noa’s gender-affirming surgery fund

Hello. My name is Noa. I am a 25 year old, queer, autistic non-binary trans person.Thank you for visiting this page.

 

I’ve set up this fund because I need support to help me access gender-affirming top surgery and in healthcare in 2021. The below sets out why.


MY JOURNEY 

I realised I was trans in November 2019.

I’d been battling myself and a lot of denial for all of my adult life. At 18 years old I lost my mum to cancer and moved to university. My whole world changed. Grief coupled with the weight of society’s expectations of me as a ‘cis queer woman’ distracted me for years. I buried my true identity because I didn’t have the strength to face it. 

I can’t express how much happier I am now to be out to the world and on a personal journey to accepting myself. I am so much more comfortable for having realised and begun expressing my true identity. I am a nonbinary trans person and I am so proud of that and proud of myself for getting to this point.

Life since being out has had so many beautiful and happy moments which I’m so grateful for. But sadly, my gender dysphoria has been worsening for the last six months which has negatively affected almost every aspect of my life and mental health. I feel I urgently need to act.  


TRANSITIONING

I’ve been in gender identity counselling and have come to understand that medically transitioning is what I really, really want to do. I want to live completely authentically and that’s what transitioning means for me.

The steps I want to pursue are top surgery and hormone (testosterone) replacement therapy. 

Under the NHS system, it will take 2 years to get my first appointment at a gender identity clinic. Which means a minimum of two years to access medical treatments which feel completely vital to me. This wait is crushing to imagine, when gender dysphoria is currently affecting so much of my life and well-being. 

This is why I hope to follow many other trans peoples’ footsteps, and go privately.  


PRIVATE TRANS HEALTHCARE

I’ve never accessed private healthcare before and were I not trans I wouldn’t have done by choice. But I feel I no longer have any choice, which is why I’m here asking for your help. 

British people aren’t great at talking about money - but I’m including the below to highlight just how hard and costly this integral transition will be, in case you are not already aware.

Privately, hormone (testosterone) replacement therapy costs £50 a month to access through GenderCare, following a £300 initial psychological assessment and a further £100-300 endocrinologist appointment. 

Private top surgery, through the surgeon (Miles Berry) I wish to use, costs between £6595 and £8594 depending on time spent in surgery, which is assessed at an initial consultation appointment (costing £150). 

YOUR SUPPORT

Historically, I’ve not always been the best at asking for help when I’m struggling. I am not good at putting myself first which is something I’m trying to work on. So in writing this I’m doing just that and swallowing my pride, because I can’t do this alone.
