Saving a Kingdom Kid

Eight months ago, while in Haiti, I met Noah – a beautiful, lively, affectionate, six year old, Kingdom Kid girl. Her wonderful smile, her warm welcome and lingering, loving hug immediately grabbed my heart. Something about Noah was different from the hundreds and hundreds of kids I had seen, hugged and played with over the years in Haiti, Nicaragua and Honduras. Maybe it was the way she squealed in delight when I gave her a lollipop, maybe it was the immense gratitude she expressed when I gave her a little stuffed animal. Maybe it was her carefree spirit. Or maybe it was those large, gorgeous, deep brown eyes that sparkled with excitement and laughter that stole my heart.

During my time in Haiti, Noah and Missonlie, her three year old sister, frequently came to “play with me”.  Every day, sometimes twice a day, the two sisters, would eagerly come over to where I was staying, with friends from the Charleston Church of Christ. They would entertain us with their singing and games while their parents, Jacques and Missadelle Louis, looked on proudly and adoringly at their two little girls. Despite their daily intense hardships, Noah’s parents inspired all of us with their spirituality, humility, hard work and positive attitude. Being strong, faithful disciples of Jesus for 18 years had filled them with faith and gratitude.

A few months ago I received the heart breaking news that Noah was diagnosed with acute Leukemia Meloide. That same week her little sister was also diagnosed with congenital cataracts. The hospital in Port au Prince has done its best to treat Noah but does not have the proper resources to provide a cure. As you can imagine, Jacques and Missadelle, who are struggling to just feed their family, are overwhelmed, desperate and pleading for help to save Noah’s life. Their tears, imploring prayers and great distress have stirred and moved my heart. I feel compelled to show compassion and ask for help on behalf of this family. Noah’s life can be saved if she comes to United States for treatment. She doesn’t have to die, her parents don’t have to grieve and her sister doesn’t have to lose her only sibling.
