Incineration - not good for the environment

No Burn Broome was formed by residents of Broome County NY on April 15, 2020, to organize opposition to the use of incineration in the proposed Lithium-ion Battery Recycling project by SungEel MCC in the heart of Endicott, NY. 

SungEel will soon start operation at 801 Clark St, across the street from people’s homes, adjacent to George W Johnson Park where children play baseball, swim in the community pool, and ride the merry-go-round, and near Little Italy.

A Nationwide Environmental Problem Coming
The true environmental impact of this facility stretches well beyond the Endicott area since it will be the first Lithium-ion battery recycling/incineration plant in the United States. SungEel plans to build 40 of these plants across the country which would be devastating to our environment.

Dangers of the Battery Recycling/Incinerator Facility
- The process SungEel will use involves subjecting Lithium-ion batteries to high very temperatures in a rotary kiln and burning of the gases produced.

- Many very toxic substances will be formed and released in SungEel‘s heating and burning process, including hydrogen fluoride, dioxins, other cancer-causing chemicals and possibly PFAS. The current cancer rate in Endicott is already high due to pollution from TCE spills by IBM in the 1970s.

- The assumption being made is that all these toxic substances will be controlled 100% of the time. It is a reckless assumption. If something goes wrong, there is no fail-safe.

- Lithium-ion batteries present a well-known fire and explosion risk, yet no formal accident analysis has been performed and no evacuation plan has been discussed.

- The Dept of Environmental Conservation has relied on inadequate emission data provided to them by SungEel with no third-party oversight in how well the data was collected. No Environmental Impact statement has been prepared.

- The benefits go to SungEel who will bring the valuable recyclable metals to their Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, 54002, South Korea home base. Endicott will be left with a) pollution from burning unrecyclable battery parts, b) very few jobs and c) a loss in property values.

- SungEel’s South Korea plant has 500-foot stacks, is in an 8000-acre industrial area and the nearest residents are 3 miles away. The Endicott facility has 100-ft stacks and is in the heart of the village.

Your Help is Needed
- We are taking legal action to stop this first operation from starting, as the potential for fires, explosions and TOXIC emissions is not what we want in our residential area or any other community across the country.

- Legal actions against organizations like this are expensive and can be lengthy. We are requesting donations to support a legal fund that will be used to assist with this action only.

- Any remaining funds will be donated to various charities that include St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Mercy House of the Southern Tier, and the Broome County Humane Society.
