Creating Accessible Sex Ed for the Blind Community

Donation protected
We’re a small group of blind+ friends and volunteers who are creating equitable access to sex education. We are committed to building blind positive & sex positive accessible educational materials, and we’re reaching out to our community to help make it happen.

Our project started when one of our members realized that the insights and needs of blind people are woefully underrepresented in sex education curriculums, with the majority of school curriculums lacking the resources and knowledge to provide adequate education to blind youth. Even where these tactile teaching tools exist, they’re often too expensive for teachers to use. This means that from early childhood education to our experiences as adults, blind people don’t always have the information we need to explore our bodies or navigate consent in relationships.

In response, we've gathered a team to produce new tools—including tactile models, diagrams, curriculum materials, how-to guides, and personal stories—to fill the gap. Most importantly, we’re excited to be making work by blind community, for blind community. Our first step is to learn what we can from existing sex education models, so we can evaluate what our community will need. We’d like to purchase the following models and resources to start our research, as well as collaborate with others who are currently working in the sex education field:

* $850-1000 Models from Positive Sex Ed, which creates pedagogical supports that present the diversity of genital anatomies
* $40 4D Human Anatomy Female Reproductive System Model from TedCo Toys
* $40 4D Human Anatomy Male Reproductive System Model from TedCo Toys
* $40 4D Human Anatomy Pregnancy Model from TedCo Toys
*  $100 APH's Health Education for Students With Visual Impairments: A Guidebook for Teachers

Our next steps will be to build our own materials by leveraging our team’s incredible skillset: we’re a group of community organizers, sex educators, trauma-informed activists, academic researchers, blindness rehabilitation teachers, accessibility & usability testers, fabricators, and so much more.

If you’d like to add your perspective to our core research team, or simply learn more about our work, please contact us at [email redacted]. To keep up with our progress, check us out our Facebook Group, Blind+ Sex Education: Creating Accessible Sex Ed for the Blind+ Community.

We’re thrilled to be growing this project, and thank you for any contribution towards making sex education accessible for all.
