Olisa “Tweety” Woods Pierce is from Columbus, Ga. She is the daughter of Oscar and Loretta Woods. Olisa graduated with a master’s in education from Columbus State University in 2003. She then became a science teacher for Central High in Phenix City, Alabama and a part-time teacher for Chattahoochee Valley Community College. In 2005 Olisa was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and she made the decision to leave teaching in the classroom because she could no longer do the standing required which was a problem because she was a very involved and mobile teacher. Not long after, Olisa found another job where she could still educate but have the freedom of not standing for long periods of time. She became the public health coordinator for the Columbus Health Department. There she educated the community on the awareness and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Anything that Olisa does she puts her heart and soul into it. In 2008 Olisa met her husband Robert Pierce and unfortunately he passed away in 2011 in a motorcycle accident. In 2012 she had her first crisis with MS. She lost her vision and the use of her arms and legs. With hard work, determination and family support Olisa did physical therapy for two years and became somewhat more independent again. In November 2014, because of issues with her health insurance she was unable to get the medicine she needed and ended up relapsing again from her MS. All the hard work she did for two years has been undone because she is worse now than she was in 2012. She is currently in the hospital not receiving any medication because of non-approval status from her insurance. The medication is very expensive for someone not receiving any health insurance. She needs help in securing funds for this medicine. Olisa’s caretaker and mother recently had a cardiac episode. This has left her unable to provide as much care because of the limitations of her congestive heart failure. Please give any amount to help this young woman return to her vibrant self. Thank you in advance for any contributions you can give and God bless you.
