NIGHT SHIFT | SYNOPSIS

Nikki is a private support worker for Albert, a young man with autism. Albert requires 24/7 care at his home. Young and new to the job, Nikki is overwhelmed by the stresses and demands that come with being a carer. Unsuccessfully doing her best to cope, she snaps and breaks one of Albert’s favourite toys. Questioning her suitability for this job, she questions if her love and care for Albert is enough to keep her around.

ABOUT THE WRITERS


BRYDI & VICTORIA

Having both had experience working with people who have autism, this story is very personal to us and explores a side to this world that we believe is rarely seen or noticed.

We want this film to explore the unique relationship between a person with a disability and their carer. We're not family members but we are involved. We care and love them as if we were. We need to know the line between our job and our heart - never an easy thing to do.

We also want to break down the stereotype of disability support workers being seen as perfect people or "saints" for the work they do. In reality they are just humans and humans mess up and aren't perfect. And there needs to be room for this to be okay.

Kirsty O'Connor as NIKKI
Kirsty is a 16th Street Studio Graduate who continues her training integrating acting, singing and dancing. Diving deeper into important stories that comment on today's social fabric and high light the complexities of human behaviour.

Laurence Boxhall as ALBERT
A NIDA graduate, Laurence's stage work includes MTC's 'Jumpy' and 'Shakespeare In Love' as well as Patalog Theatre's 'Punk Rock'. His screen credits include: 'Ronny Chieng: International Student', 'Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation', 'Deadline Gallipoli', 'Worst Year of My Life, Again', 'Spirit of the Game' and 'Dave and Theo'. 

Sue Rosenwax as MORA
Sue has studied drama extensively at some of Melbourne’s leading institutions, including The National Theatre, Howard Fine and NIDA Summer School. In addition to her extensive theatre credits, Sue has been apart of a plethora of short films, some of which have screened internationally.

BUSHFIRE RELIEF

Due to the tragedy of the ongoing bushfires, the entire Night Shift team acknowledges that our country is undergoing a trying time. We understand that asking for funding for our film seems trivial in comparison.
