Residency in the Motherland

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,

As many of you know, creating works of art to explore my inner and outer world is my life’s great joy and challenge.

In pursuit of this I am going to Italy!

I applied and have been accepted into an artist’s residency program in northern Italy, in a town called Sirmione, at the foot of the Alps. I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity for two uninterrupted weeks of art making, and for the opportunity to travel back to my motherland – the home country of my mother and father and the rest of my kin. It will be the first time I’ve gone back to Italy since childhood and I cannot wait to visit as an adult person. I am so excited to travel to Sirmione, to a place that is unfamiliar to me, and to a region that according to common sense, will contrast with the region of my southern forefathers. By discovering a new part of the country I hope to more deeply investigate my roots and to find inspiration in the parallels and differences to my home culture.

The town of Sirmione is home to a paper museum, a vineyard, and sits on the shore of Lake Garda. This will be a much-needed escape from city life and an inspirational setting to grow new work. I will be sharing studio space with five other artists whose company will be invaluable  to broadening my community outside of New York.

After creating a book cover for a literary magazine that will debut this spring (!!) I’ve been overwhelmed with inspiration about making drawings for the printed page. I hope to pursue a new idea during my stay in Italy, and to gain insight into local decorative crafts that I can use to execute my visions. I am sure both the idea and myself will transform over the course of the residency – and this is the point.

In order to make this plan a reality I am asking for your support. Your donations will enable me to pay for my lodging , round trip airfare to Italy, art making supplies, and sustenance to keep me going! I can’t do it without you! Sincerely!

The residency begins in May and I will need to pay for my expenses by the end of March.

In exchange for your help, I would like to offer each of you a finished artwork. The idea of exchange is critically important to me, as I would like to continue to foster a feeling of community between us, and a shared sense of enjoyment.

I am so grateful that I belong to a community that allows me to feel safe asking for help!

 With love and gratitude,

Nicole
