My name is Nick Owen. I am 12 years old and in September I will be celebrating my Bar Mitzvah!!! My congregation, Temple Beth El, assists me in taking on a charity "mitzvah" or community service project.
My mitzvah project focuses on three things:
*To show the bravery of not only our country's veterans, but the bravery shown by their families as well.
*Raise awareness of the fact that children of veterans, like their parent(s) sometimes need help.
*Raise money to donate to organizations that provide assistance to the families and children of veterans.
I am raising money for Child Guidance Center.
Founded in 1967 by a group of parents and mental health professionals, Child Guidance Center (CGC), a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, helps children and parents throughout Orange County achieve healthier, better balanced lives through innovative counseling, treatment and educational enrichment programs. Our staff includes over 50 Masters and Doctor-level child mental health specialists. Each week, Child Guidance Center's multidisciplinary team treats over 1000 children and families. add: They also serve children of veterans, through a special relationship they have developed with the Long Beach VA Medical center and other veteran-serving organizations which make referrals to CGC.

Bar Mitzvah:
As a Jewish boy, turning 13 is a very important step in my life. According to Jewish law, when Jewish boys become 13 years old, they become accountable for their actions and become a bar mitzvah. Prior to reaching bar mitzvah, the child's parents hold the responsibility for the child's actions. After this age, the boys and girls bear their own responsibility for Jewish ritual law, tradition, and ethics, and are able to participate in all areas of Jewish community life.
In its primary meaning, the Hebrew word "mitzvah" refers to precepts and commandments as commanded by God. It is a word used in Judaism to refer to the 613 commandments given in the Torah at Mount Sinai, where all the Jews accepted the Torah, saying "We Will Do, and We Will Listen", and the seven rabbinic commandments instituted later for a total of 620. According to the teachings of Judaism, all moral laws are, or are derived from, divine commandments.
In its secondary meaning, "mitzvah", as with the English word "commandment," refers to a moral deed performed as a religious duty. As such, the term mitzvah has also come to express an act of human kindness.
