NHS WORKER STUCK IN PERU - GET SHEENA WATSON HOME!

Donation protected
Our colleague from North West Ambulance Service is currently stuck in Lima on her own, Peru due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Currently Sheena has no idea when she will be able to get on a flight to return home.

Sheena travelled to South America for a trip of a lifetime and is now left helpless as she awaits help from the UK Government. Whilst she waits for this help from the government she is picking up a $150 a night bill for a hotel room. Sheena has already spent almost two weeks stuck in the airport hotel awaiting repatriation. We have set this page up to support Sheena whilst she is stuck in Peru to make this experience a bit more bearable.

Here is Sheena's account of the ordeal she is going through published in a local newspaper.

I started this trip on March 11 and I was due to be here for three weeks. Everything was all fine when I flew out, there were no restrictions, no quarantine. There was more or less just 24 hours notice to get out. Airports were absolutely crazy, everybody was just fighting to get home. When I got to Cusco Airport, the gates were closed to the airport, you had to queue and provide your passport and evidence of your reservation on a flight to get in through the gates. Once you were in, everybody was pushing and shoving, fighting to get to a desk. After that I had a flight booked from Lima to Sao Paulo, but it got cancelled because it was due to leave at 1am and the borders closed at midnight.

Sheena is now stranded in an airport hotel in Lima with other British travellers, all obeying a strict curfew. She says she has no idea when she might make it back home for her ambulance service shifts.

Following talks on Saturday with his counterpart in Peru, foreign secretary Dominic Raab tweeted: "Amidst all the challenges of tackling coronavirus, we committed to working together in the coming days to enable UK nationals in Peru and Peruvian nationals in the UK to return home.”

In the meantime, Ms Watson is racking up a hotel bill which she never anticipated - $154 (£131) for every night she is has to stay there (With no idea when these possible flights will be organised). She says if she leaves the airport complex, she will not be allowed back in.
