Death Penalty Repeal Documentary

Tax deductible
A Documentary Film Project to Help End the Death Penalty in New Hampshire

Right now, New Hampshire is tantalizingly close to achieving the 2/3 supermajorities needed in both the Senate and House to override a gubernatorial veto of a bill repealing the death penalty.

The clock is ticking, as the vote to sustain or override Governor Sununu's veto of SB593 will take place on September 13.

The most significant obstacle to achieving repeal in New Hampshire continues to be the political notion that the death penalty is needed to protect law enforcement officers and properly prosecute homicide defendants.  Politicians routinely promise to "support" local or state police by opposing death penalty abolition. Politicians and police alike often claim that the death penalty has a deterrent effect  on murderers, even though no such evidence exists. Others cite the necessity of having the death penalty as a tool in the arsenal of prosecutors.

Governor Chris Sununu even flanked himself with a large group of police officers when he vetoed the repeal bill on June 21st .  During the several prior months, the governor refused to personally meet with anyone who disagreed with his position, including law enforcement veterans.  We cannot let this suppression of alternative voices stand.

The aim of this video project is to advance alternative perspectives on the death penalty by featuring the voices of professional and authoritative veterans from law enforcement, prosecution, corrections and the criminal justice system in New Hampshire. By sharing their stories – including retired police officers who currently have family members serving in law enforcement – we will demonstrate that these are credible individuals with substantial law enforcement experience who believe it is time to repeal the death penalty. In addition, the video will help us articulate a much less political and more practical suite of solutions for "supporting our officers in uniform."

The final video product will be accompanied by shorter clips for use on social media, all delivered in an appealing documentary format.

Your donation will help us pay for the professional production company, and costs associated with production, duplication, promotion and distribution around New Hampshire.

All donors will be granted advanced access to the streaming version of the film, ahead of the public release. Your name will be listed in the credits as a supporter, unless you specifically request that it not be included.

Please consider donating to our documentary video project so we can put these powerful voices in play before the NH Legislature is called back to session this fall to vote on our vetoed bill.

And please share this project with your friends!
