A New Home For Jake

Jake's Story

Jake Suggs was four months old when he became infected with H-Flu Spinal Meningitis and almost died. He escaped death, but the brain swelling caused by his sickness resulted in permanent, life long brain damage.

That was 26 years ago.

Today, Jake still requires 24 hour care. He cannot talk, and his cognitive ability is similar to that of a 12 month old toddler.

A New Home For Jake

Jake lived at home until he was 23 years old and was primarily cared for by his own family. After much prayer and consideration, Jake's parents made the difficult decision to place Jake in a group home.

Jake's journey hasn't been easy for him. In the first two years he thrived and did well in the group home environment. But, unfortunately, Jake has not been responding well to some recent changes & new expectations within the new home. He has lost 20 lbs in the past few months and is becoming extremely stressed and agitated in his current environment.

It has become obvious to Jake's family and caregivers that he will not be able to thrive in this environment and he must be moved to a new home with a better infrastructure to properly address his needs.

How You Can Help Jake

Unfortunately, the sudden timing and expense of this transition is too much for the family to tackle  alone.

Jake's friends & family are coming together to make this transition possible for him. We recognize that this is a heavy burden to carry alone and want to support Jake and his family with prayer, friendship & financial assistance.

We have found a fantastic home for Jake with excellent staff and trained healthcare providers. We are eagerly awaiting Jake's transition. However, before Jake can make the transition, we must find funding for a few improvements to the facility so the staff can accomodate Jake's needs:

1) Remodel the bathroom to install a bathtub. (Jake cannot be bathed in a shower, he needs a bathtub)

2) Install a fence for a portion of the yard. 430 feet of fencing, 1 large and 2 small gates. (Jake cannot play outside unless there is a fence)

3) Swings: Purchase and Install indoor and outdoor swings. (This is the only activity Jake enjoys and can do unsupervised)

4) Replace current carpet with linoleum flooring in bedroom. (Since Jake is in adult diapers, this makes cleaning up easier for the staff)

The estimated cost for the materials and labor for the entire project will be close to $6,000

Together, we can make this a smooth transition for Jake and his family.  If you have any questions or would like to contact the family for any reason, you can email Vicki at [email redacted]
