Steve Lillis running NYC Marathon for Charlie Wynn

On Sunday November 3, I am running the  New York Marathon to raise funds for boxer Charlie Wynn.
Many of the boxing fraternity know that poor Charlie suffered serious injuries sparring whilst training more than two years ago.
Charlie came through, but is being looked after in a care home and his wife wants her husband home.
That means having their home customised to suit Charlie’s needs. It  is a big expense to the family who have already spent their savings on Charlie’s care which is not covered by the NHS.
Friends and the boxing industry are making efforts to help Charlie and his family. 
Charlie being at home will help his recovery from a tragic accident.
Eddie Muscat and Ray Bull  from the Peacock Gym are spearheading the fundraising so hopefully I can help by raising money through my efforts in New York.
If you can donate no matter how small it will go a long way.
All money raised will go straight to the Wynn family. 
There are no expenses being taken for my trip to New York or race entry.  
I would like to thank Dave Hill from Ringside boxing who is throwing some training gear my way, Eddie, Ray and Millwall fans Mark Hunt, Micky Simpson and Ian Harrington who made me aware of Charlie’s plight. Like many I believed, Charlie had recovered and I was shocked when Ian told me earlier this year.

Below  is a message and more details from Charlie’s family, telling you more about this wonderful young man and where he is in life now......

“Charlie is a cheeky, loving, kind and considerate young man who is instantly loved by anyone who he comes into contact with. His fun loving personality is infectious. He has friends in abundance, a very close knit family and a beautiful wife of 3 years Alana.

At the age of 19 (he is now 29) he took himself off to a local gym because he fancied trying his hand in the world of amateurboxing. It turned out a very good decision as he went on to excel in the sport with a very good amateur record picking up many a good win and several titles along the way.

In 2016 he decided to take the plunge and turn professional. Although he picked up some decent sponsorship deals (the Millwall supporters club was by far the most prestigious to him as he is a lifelong Millwall supporter and season ticket holder). He still had to continue to work full time as an electrician to fulfil financial obligations. To date he has only had two pro fights mainly owing to bad luck with injures. Although comfortably won them both.

On March 16th 2018 whilst preparing for his third fight Charlie had a mishap when sparring. He became very weak towards the end of a six round sparring session and it was obvious that something was wrong…it was!

Charlie lost consciousness and was taken to Kings College Hospital where we were told he had suffered an acute subdural haematoma (a large brain bleed). Charlie had to have emergency lifesaving surgery where a proportion of his skull was removed to relieve dangerous pressure within his skull.

The operation was successful and the bleed was evacuated but Charlie’s brain had been significantly injured as a result of the bleed.

The last 15 months have been a rollercoaster of a ride. We have had highs and lows. Charlie made an amazing recovery only to take a serious dip which resulted in more surgery. In November 2019 we hit the reset button not knowing what the future held.

In December 2019 we moved to a new Rehabilitation Centre in Kent where Charlie had to begin his journey all over again. He has surpassed all of our expectations, the true fighter in him shines through everyday. This is typical Charlie, a determined and strong willed young man.

The money that has been raised so far has been a God Send. It has helped ease some of the financial pressures and enabled us not only to keep a roof over our heads but begin to think about the adjustments to our home, to accommodate Charlie’s future needs, as our ultimate goal is to get Charlie home.

It is impossible to know how long his recovery will take and that is why we are so appreciative of your continued support.

In such a difficult time, it is so comforting to know that there as so many kind and caring people out there. We are truly overwhelmed. Words will never be enough to express our gratitude. “
