New Wheels for Jennifer
Donation protected
Jennifer is a truly amazing person. When just 57 years old, she was diagnosed with MDS and is now bound to a wheelchair, yet you’ll never hear her utter a negative word or catch her without a smile. We’ve known each other since kindergarten and are now coincidentally extended family since her sister married my cousin. In 2013, “Fer” (so known by those close to her) was diagnosed with MDS or Myelodysplastic Syndrome, which is a form of Leukemia. In 2014, she received a bone marrow/stem cell transplant and the MDS is in remission BUT, the meds to treat it resulted in steroid induced myopathy, aka “muscle wasting disease” which damaged her muscles & nerves. It’s now been determined that she’ll not walk again and is therefore wheelchair bound. Her husband, soul-mate & full-time caregiver Roy (also an amazing person) purchased a Quantum Edge Power Wheelchair which greatly increases her mobility & comfort and also reduces the risk of pressure sores. Medicare covered a large portion but Jennifer & Roy incurred $5000 out-of-pocket to make it happen. Since Roy is now retired to care for Jennifer, the on-going medical expenses are a continued challenge. Any amount to help them pay for the wheelchair and offset these on-going expenses would be a blessing to them.
