New Orleans Covid-19 Rent Aid for the Underserved

Donation protected

Can you give $25.00 to help today?

Imagine having a thriving tourist oriented business in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, and suddenly the tourists stop coming due to the threat of Covid-19 (Coronavirus). Now you have no income at all, and are are risk of losing your home because you can't pay rent. You have applied for many different assistance programs, only to be turned down or put on a wait list because you are self employed and don't have the detailed financial paperwork to qualify. You have nowhere to turn.

This is exactly what happened to "Lucille," a successful and well-respected tarot and palm reader on Jackson Square in New Orleans, and also the matriarch of a family of 5. This is high tourist season, and usually she is busy bringing the culture of New Orleans to eager visitors. But not now. Jackson Square is closed. She works in cash only, so she doesn't have the financial paperwork, such as tax returns, pay stubs, employer references, or even a bank statement, to apply for the myriads of programs that can give assistance with her rent. Lucille and her four family members (two of whom are disabled) faced losing the roof over their head. Given the medical needs of her family, this was especially terrifying. Lucille actually lost her home due to lost income and ineligibility for mainstream rent assistance programs. It was through helping Lucille that the idea for this fund was born.

"Lucille" and her family are in a better place now. Now more families need help, and you can be part of that!

The economy of New Orleans is largely based on tourism which has all but disappeared since the spread of Covid-19. Thousands of workers have been left without an income in this difficult time. Although many organizations have popped up that are offering aid, the large majority of this aid is focused on service industry workers (bartenders, servers & gig economy workers).

We are fundraising for those workers who lost their income and don't fit into the above category, and who also may not have the financial paperwork or employer references that are required by other organizations to receive financial assistance to pay rent.

The average need for rental assistance is $500 - $1000. With a goal of $40,000, between 40 and 80 families will be able to keep their homes over the coming months. The more money raised, the more help can be given. Perhaps we can even exceed our goal!

Can you donate $3.00, $7.00, $16.00, or more to our campaign today? Every little bit helps, and the need for rental assistance is urgent! Of course larger amounts help too! The faster we reach our goal, the faster folks in need can receive aid.

This fundraiser is part of the Greater New Orleans Caring Collective which is currently providing 1000+ meals deliveries per week to at-risk community members affected by Covid-19.

We are still in the fundraising phase for this project. Once our fundraising goal has been reached, a plan for disbursement will be released, including an application that will not require any financial documentation.

100% of funds raised will go to community members in need.
