New Headstone for James the Convict

Donation protected
Would you please help us with the costs of replacing the headstone of the grave of the convict James Whipps.

The original 1885 headstone of the Convict James Whipps and his wife MaryAnn, located in a grave in Quarter Sessions Rd, Tarro near Newcastle, has disintegrated to the point where it must be replaced.

James was the first Whipps in Australia and was transported from Essex England in 1837.

I have received a quote from Budget Headstones and am waiting for quotes from other masons.

The work required is to recreate the headstone in sandy yellow granite with granite plaque, engraving and installation of the headstone. There will also be some additional admin feed from Newcastle Council.

The original inscription on the tombstone read, and the inscription on the new headstone will read:

In loving memory of
JAMES WHIPPS
Who died 4th August
1885
Aged 65 years
Also his dearly beloved wife
MARYANN WHIPPS
Who died 11th April
1922
Aged 87 years
