New Canadian Families

My first deployment to Kabul Afghanistan was in 2004 and these fine gentlemen adopted me as their Afghan brother for an entire year of my life. In March 2005, I was involved in a roadside bomb with Asif as my driver and Hamid and the team from the Embassy came to our aid and that bond will always link us. Upon leaving in 2005, we remained in touch thru social media platforms but I was unsure if they still remained as employees of the Canadian Embassy of Afghanistan or not until returning for another deployment in 2018 and couldn’t believe how much they still looked the same. Although I looked a lot older, according to them, lol. Over the next 8 months we sat on a regular basis for a locally prepared dinner and shared stories.

When the Taliban took over their home country in the summer, Asif, Hamid, Haroon, Taaj and Shaker along with their families resettled in Canada. They are safe, happy and incredible thankful. Next month I plan to travel to their residences within the GTA and welcome them as they did me in 2004, as my Canadian brothers, along with their families. In anticipation of this day, some of my family and their friends have already provided me with gift cards to help them furnish their new homes and prepare for their first Canadian winter. I am so incredibly happy to have them and their families safe within our beautiful country’s borders and look forward to sharing photos of the donation.
