Neuroscience Nurse Week 2020

I struggled deciding if I should start a GoFundMe or not. For those who know me, I’m not one to ask for anything. However, this isn’t for me. It for the amazing nurses I work with and the nurses who have come to work every day with a smile and positive attitude given the circumstances. As many of you know I am charge a nurse at a Denver hospital. On a typical day I assist in running a 36 bed neurosciences unit. We care for patients of all ages with diagnosis that include brain tumors, strokes, spine surgery, and multiple sclerosis to name a few.
Over the past several weeks our typical nursing day has been turned upside down. As Colorado COVID-19 hospitalizations increase, the unit I work on has had to be converted to an all COVID-19 unit. We have gone from caring for neuro patients to caring for positive COVID-19 patients. While we all chose to work with neuro patients, we didn’t get to choose if our unit was converted, we didn’t get to choose whether we wanted to care for COVID-19 patients. But this doesn’t matter because every nurse I work with has continued to come to work, has offered to work extra, and rearranged schedules to cover holes. Some nurses have moved out of their house to protect loved ones, we get naked in the garage to keep germs out of the house, and we have forgone kisses and hugs from the people we care most about. We have all had mixed emotions, but if we get work on a COVID-19 unit we wouldn’t want to do it with any other group of nurses.
Countless family members and friends have reached out to see how they can show support or offer help to my co-workers and myself. Many have offered to buy meals, but to be honest our break room has been stocked with local restaurant donations. Instead I propose “adopting a nurse.” My goal is to raise $30 for each nurse on my unit to purchase items that will be useful to them and remind them of how much the world appreciates their hard work and dedication. Items would include things like compression socks, coffee gift cards, and pen lights. (I can’t list everything because I want some items to be a surprise and I know my co-workers will read this). This is not affiliated in any way with the organization I work at. Nurses Week is May 6-12 and Neuroscience Nurse Week is May 12-18. With your help, I would love to make the 2020 Nurse and Neuroscience Nurse Weeks Epic!!
