My Mom is battling Lung Cancer #NenaFightsOn

Death! Cancer! Living on my own! These were the words coming out of my mother’s mouth a week before my thirteenth birthday. Instead of thinking about the happy times I would be spending with friends at my birthday party I was dealing with the life or death of my mother. My mom had found a lump on her neck and it was confirmed that she had cancer. She was going to have surgery to remove the cancer on the weekend of my thirteenth birthday.

While hearing this news, feeling of fear filled me. I considered the possibilities that she might die during the surgery and wondered how I would support myself if the worst happened. My mothers always served as the foundation in my life. I never met my father; it has been just my mom and me. What would I do if she were no longer alive?

The week before my mother’s surgery I spent quality time with her; we talked a lot. Prior to learning about her illness, I took for granted how important she was in my life, almost losing her made me realize how important she is to me.

The battle with cancer I went through with my mother helped me to appreciate the value of life and family. Today, there is not a day that I don’t express the love I have for my mother. During this time I was constantly thinking, what is she didn’t make it out alive? What would life be without her?…”

Flash forward 18 years later, I’ve graduated from High School, College, started my own production company and most importantly my own family. My mother, better known as Nena has since moved from Seattle to Las Vegas, worked as an apartment manager for 9 years where she went above & beyond and made a huge impact on her tenants lives. Closing in on 55 years old, my mother has worked 12hr+ overnight at a factory for the past 2 years with little time off. Outside of work my mother is a simple woman who enjoys her trips to Bingo chasing the big money jackpots with a rum & coke (or two) and good times with the family. My mother wish to visit and spend a lot more time with her only grand daughter in NY, my little Harper.

Over the past few months, my mother knew something wasn’t right with her body. After multiple trips to the ER, Biopsies, MRIs, and doctors appointments all saying nothing is wrong, Nena has finally been diagnosed with cancer again. This time Lung Cancer.

Though my mother’s health insurance has helped; copayments for multiple Biopsy, MRI’s, ER visits and more has taken a real toll on our finances and quickly has both of us going into debt.  As Nena preps for surgery (meaning she has not able to work much) before Thanksgiving plus multiple rounds of Chemotherapy planned in upcoming months, we have decided to start a GoFundme to hopefully help with the financial burdens Cancer can bring to a family. Nena's regular financial needs; rent, copays, cost of living, travel expenses, prior bills.

I am an only child & need to help support my mother through this tough time but I am also the main income for my immediate family; and living in NY and my mother in Vegas, I will have to travel back & forth quite a lot, most likely missing a lot of job & work opportunities. We will also be spending unexpected money on baby sitting/care since I won’t be around to help my family and basic financial duties I typically cover.

Please join us in supporting Vionet "Nena" Vasquez in her battle to eliminate the cancer threatening her health.

Your generosity and support will go to funding the rapidly growing costs of medical treatments along with making sure we don’t have to worry about how we will cover unexpected costs while fighting this battle.

Many Thanks from my Mom (Vionet "Nena" Vasquez & I, Daniel Vasquez!
