Nelson Island Spay/Neuter Clinic

Bethel Friends of Canines ,(BFK9) in partnership with Alaska Native Rural Veterinary Inc. (ANRV) , as well as dog owners of Nelson Island, and volunteers, are trying to get a spay, neuter, and vaccination clinic set up on Nelson Island.
Nelson Island is located in southwest Alaska between the mainland and Nunivak Island. The island is home to three small Yup’ik villages; Nightmute, Toksook Bay, and Tununak.
As with most rural Alaskan villages, veterinary care, resources for pet health, as well as pet supplies, are not available or readily accessible. The lack of available services combined with the high cost of living in rural Alaska has lead to an overpopulation of unwanted dogs as well as a public and animal safety issue because of dog bites, and the rapid spread of animal diseases such as Parvo & Rabies.
Through education & volunteerism, some villages have recently begun a more proactive and humane approach to deal with the animal overpopulation. Such is the case with Toksook Bay.
Past spay/neuter clinics have been a success and we hope to provide the same opportunity for the villages of Nelson Island.
Alaska Native Rural Veterinary Inc. is a non-profit organization that donates their time providing valuable veterinary services for rural Alaska.
While they have some funds available, this would be a large undertaking due to the distance and cost of travel, number of villages to be served, and the equipment needed to get the job done.
For example, a simple one-way ticket, for one person to travel to a village, from Anchorage, Alaska, can cost upwards of $400 to $500. This is without the addition cost that one would incur for extra luggage.
Your generous donation would help ANRV with the cost of travel for the volunteer veterinarians as well as the necessary supplies and staff they require to get the job done.
