Neighbor Zine is a publication of artworks, lists, letters and notes printed in blue ink that, when viewed collectively, will serve to inform, uplift, and calm us during this crisis.

The zine includes drawings, paintings, photographs, digital illustrations, poems, tips on staying physically and emotionally healthy, playlists, miscellaneous cute stuff, and more. All the submissions are from our amazing local artists. Currently, we are still constructing the zine, and will begin to deliver to those who donated starting on the June 5th.

All profits from the sale of this zine will go to The Connecticut Covid-19 Charity Connection.

The production costs were paid for in full by its creators, so that all profits can go directly to charity. On the back of the zine you’ll find various resources, including links to organizations and charities in need of funding and/or volunteers.

To receive a physical copy of the zine we are asking for a donation of at LEAST $7.50 ($5+$2 for shipping and $0.50 to offset the 2.9% of total sales plus the $0.30 gofundme takes out per transaction…gah). After that, we ask that you consider contributing more, as your financial situation permits.

After the donation goal is met, we will be releasing Neighbor Zine online so others who cannot afford to donate can have access to the resources.

I started Neighbor because — being an immunocompromised person myself — I was unable to get out and help others in close proximity. While I donated to numerous charities, I still felt as if I was not contributing as much as I could; and I just wasn’t making enough money doing freelance to help everyone I wanted to. Not only did this leave me feeling idle and purposeless, self-quarantining immediately left me feeling isolated from my creative circle. I found myself increasingly unable to cope emotionally with the current state of affairs.

In this deep state of isolation and experiencing painful relapses in my mental wellbeing — accompanied by the ever-present questions of “what comes next? why me? am I alone?” — I began to reach out for help in the ways that I could. Slowly, I began to realize that I was not, in fact, alone. There were so very many people who loved me, supported me, validated me, and cared about me in ways I had been taking for granted. I experienced an outpouring of support from people who listened to me, played online games with me, gave me advice and food, and made me laugh. I started to think about the art they made, the music they curated for me, the sourdough starters they gifted me, and the ways in which they live their lives that inspired me to live my own a bit more fully. The community had been there all along; maybe it took a pandemic for me to really appreciate it.

It was then that I looked around and saw I had all the supplies and capability to create a zine. I looked around again and saw all of the wonderful artists in my community. What better way to raise money for local charity than with an assortment of super cool stuff from the people who live and create here? What better way to share it with everyone and get the juices flowing than with a prompt and a publication and a way to collectively create something for the greater good? And we can do it without having to compromise our health.

I want this zine to be something people can look at and feel energized, comforted, heard, helped, and supported. I want to help in anyway I can, and create something cool in the process with the awesome people in our area. I want to help those who may feel lost and isolated like I did; the people who need their community now more than ever. I didn’t think anything I could do was enough, but I’m learning even something small can make a difference.

If we aren’t there for our neighbors, who will be?
