MAKING A DIFFERENCE

We all know people who suffer from insecurities, not fitting in; being told you cannot make it, abuse or trauma. Therapy is a means to help those suffering from mental health issues.

Helping those with what I call “needy hearts” requires a community with each member serving as a building block in the culture for change.

The world is changing! As we read, watch, and learn of the devastations, we ask ourselves how can we help?

As a music therapist, I know and understand that together we can make a difference! This is why I want to further my educational development in Counseling and Psychological Studies (concentrating on trauma and crisis counseling).

I’m happy to announce that I got accepted at Regent University, USA for their PhD program of Philosophy in Counseling & Psychological Studies - Trauma & Crisis.

I am in need of financial assistance to cover my studies and would love to ask for your heart-felt contribution. I implore you to make a difference in any way possible.

MY STORY

My name is Sherida Obimdi, born in the Netherlands. I was the child that struggled with reading and understanding things quickly. My teachers thought it best for me to attend a special need’s school. I developed insecurities quiet early and fitting into society became a challenge. I always had big dreams, yet had to deal with mental health issues, along with being abused. I’ve had to deal with and overcome PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). It took a long time for me to open up about my experiences.

I SUFFERED MUCH LONGER THAN NECESSARY

I suffered much longer than was necessary. When trauma is treated early, it prevents more damage. Untreated mental health issues negatively affect our lives, and that of loved ones. My goal is to offer the right therapy and education, making people more aware that there is hope.

In my final college year, I informed a teacher about my desire to study music in university. She laughed and said, “That will be too hard for you. You will never be able to get into higher education. You don’t have the brains”. I started to believe that I may not have the brains and ended up failing to get into 5 music programs. I am a person of faith, believing that as you think, so you are. But I changed my mind-set and persisted.

From that moment, everything started changing. I obtained a Bachelor in Popular Music and a Masters in Music Therapy in The UK. Counseling played a key role in achieving my academic qualifications.

IMPACTING LIVES ..MY EXPERIENCE AS A THERAPIST

As a Music Therapist, married with 3 children, I have worked with organizations in The Netherlands such as ASVZ www.asvz.nl and Vitalis www.vitalisgroep.nl.

Independently, I’ve also been invited to participate in workshops and seminars as a keynote speaker, featured on TV and radio in both The Netherlands and The UK as a guest therapist, as well as creating online contents. I am currently developing an online self-help guide for people with low self-esteem, fear and related issues

I recognize the increasing need to help sufferers with mental health issues, and I plan to contribute my quota in making a difference as far as I can reach internationally.

The PhD program scheduled to start in January 2021, takes me steps closer to making a difference.
