My heart is full of loving memories of my dear brother, Zaid Hmidan who was laid to rest yesterday.

“Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world. A veteran does not have that problem." –Ronald Reagan

As an American war hero, Zaid spent most of his life in patriotic service to the nation he loved. He was a Ranger in the US Army, a sniper with the Marines and a leader of numerous covert operations defending our country.

Only 18 months older, he was my companion and protector. When I expressed my life’s hopes and ambitions, Zaid dreamt with me. In my darkest moments, it was Zaid who would hold me tight and give me the courage to face what I needed to do.

Without Zaid’s countless sacrifices, I wouldn’t have achieved my successes. He worked two jobs while I was in university. He made the difficult decision to leave the US Marines, to care for our aging parents, thereby enabling me to move to Switzerland.

For all of us who knew him, his big heart was always open. No matter what hardship he faced, if you were in need, one call and he would be with you. He would welcome you with arms wide-open and flash his signature smile telling you “don’t worry, I got you”.

If you are lucky enough to have a Zaid in your life, you know it - - that person who gives you the wings to fly. Please reach out to them and thank them - as one day they may not be here.

Zaid leaves behind two sons. Faysal age 21, a Junior at the Culinary Institute of America and Raslan age 19, completed his freshmen year at IVC and is on his gap year. Zaid’s biggest wish was to make sure his sons graduated university, something his active duty military career didn’t enable him to accomplish.

For those of you who have kindly reached out wanting to send flowers etc. we would appreciate your contribution to Faysal and Raslan’s Education fund to help honor Zaid’s last wishes.

Zaid, we got you now. You will always live deep in my heart and the gates of our memories will never close.
