Native Spirit Indigenous Film Festival

Donation protected
2020 Native Spirit Festival 12 Oct—12 Nov — we're volunteer-run, rolling with the blows of lockdown, and asking for your help with extra costs in taking our festival online, which showcases 100+ films from 60+ Indigenous Nations in 20+ countries, with Panel discussions, artists and musicians from around the world, plus our local Indigenous communities in London. This is a rare chance for audiences to immerse themselves in contemporary global Indigenous Cinema, to hear stories and truths firsthand, which are labelled 'niche' by our film industry, seldom covered in mainstream media or state education. Experience experimental films, artworks and and creations you've never seen before.

We need £1000
— for digital platform costs to stream films and speaker panels
— for technician support with livestream discussions
— for Guest Speakers honorarium
— for website development and design
— for flyer and programme design
— for professional PR and Promotion
— for dissemination of Indigenous Pathways & Protocols to our National TV & Film & Media Industry

Your contributions on this platform will allow us to continue our work free from Corporate funding and sponsorship that often conflict with Indigenous Peoples ways of life.

About Indigenous Cinema —
after decades of onscreen misrepresentation, Indigenous screen storytellers are reclaiming and translating oral traditions, protecting languages for their Peoples and taking back control of narratives. Content creators are also reimagining and expanding traditional definitions and understandings of the moving image by experimenting with form and genre.  Many artists are also in the unique situation of following cultural protocols, connecting perspectives and stories from past, present and future to tell Indigenous truths and values.

About Native Spirit Festival —
UK’s first and only Independent annual festival of films, talks and performances promoting Indigenous filmmakers, mediaMakers and artists, Indigenous-run film productions, collectives, and revitalisation of endangered languages for future generations. We curate guest programmes and collaborate on year-round events, and mentor 13 Moons screenings in partnership with SOAS Native Spirit Film Society. We partner with Native Spirit Taiwan; and recently established a #microIndigenous strand with MicroMania Film Festival (Buffalo NY) for films 5mins +under. 2020 brings a collaboration with American Museum, the start of our initiative to celebrate Native American Heritage Month every November in the UK.

Native Spirit Foundation —
is a non-profit registered Charity, run entirely by volunteers. Founded by Mapuche leader Freddy Treuquil in 2005 to bring knowledge and awareness of Native cultures, and longer-term Community educational projects supporting Escuela Nueva. To quote Freddy “All the [activists] have come to the conclusion that one objective of making video, radio and television is for the other culture to know us. It is necessary to create a bridge to share our culture in an educational form, without losing our identity.”
