On May 20th Nathan Miller, age 14, was critically injured when a side by side punctured and crushed his pelvic area. He was driving a Polaris Ranger with a friend when it rolled and landed on Nathan trapping him at the hips. His friend was miraculously only bruised and slightly banged up. Nathan was rushed to the Drigg’s hospital then immediately air lifted to EIRMC.
Upon arriving at EIRMC’s ICU Nathans injuries were diagnosed as; multiple pelvic fractures, a severed urethra, and severed colon. Nathan underwent 3 emergency surgeries Saturday evening. A colostomy bag, a suprapubic catheter, and external fixator for his pelvic fractures and a screw was place in one of his pelvic fractures. He had a follow up surgery on Tuesday and his condition was stabilizing. When we visited him on Tuesday he was more himself and able smile and joke around. Nathan remained in the ICU from Saturday until Wednesday and then he was transferred to a private room with the anticipation of being transferred to the physical therapy unit in a day or two depending on his progress.
Nathan’s hardware will remain in for 6 weeks, and at that time the doctors will assess the healing process and schedule surgeries to remove the hardware one at time with a undetermined recovery period in-between each surgery. Currently the doctors are anticipating that the specialized surgeries will need to be performed at the University of Utah hospital by robotics.
We are asking for prayers and any monetary help you are willing to give to ease the astronomical financial burden from ongoing medical procedure and his parents lost income. For those of you who know Nathan are well aware that he is not one to sit still. He is a very active, athletic boy involved in many sports and we are praying for a full recovery. We would like to thank you for reading Nathans story in hopes that this will be a reminder to all who own ATV’s to use proper safety gear such as; helmets, seat belts, and doors if you have them.
