I want to pursue graduate education in Restorative Practices at the International Institute of Restorative Practices (IIRP), which offers a Master of Science in Restorative Practices.
Now more than ever it is important for us to find ways to heal our wounded, hurt, and lost kids who are suffering because they don’t feel they are a part of the communities they live in. As school communities seek to find alternatives to suspension and expulsion, restorative practices apply consequences while also repairing the harm done to individuals and communities. Restorative practices seeks to insure that all people, especially students, feel cared for no matter what their background or history is.
In 2016, I took a four-day course in Restorative Practices and in the process found something I had been seeking. As a teacher (specifically in Special Education), I often have to deal with conflict that arises from student behavior. However, almost all of these behavioral issues stem from a greater issue that isn't being addressed. Restorative practices focus first on building a strong community, so that when that community is harmed by the actions of a member, there is a way to restore the harm done. Instead of vilifying people and escalating conflict or divisions, restorative practices seeks to insure that everyone is an integral part of the community and a part of resolving issues that arise.
I am a public school teacher in my sixth year of teaching, and paying off student loans. I am looking to this fund as a way to earn this degree and put restorative practices to work in my school. In addition, I expect that I would be able to work with other community groups that desired healing or growth.
I appreciate you considering this request. The money given will support tuition and costs of the program. I want to implement restorative practices in my work and in the greater community.
