Nash is getting top surgery this year! After a year of complete 2020 chaos and jumping through all the insurance/healthcare system hoops, getting a 2021 timeline for top surgery feels like a small pinprick of light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, we just simply do not have the money to cover all of the expenses this surgery will entail without accruing considerable medical debt.
Nash, unfortunately, has a 2020 story much like many others this year. Early in the pandemic, they lost their job. They have been unable to find consistent work since and have scraped together enough to cover their monthly bills with odd and temporary jobs - most of which involve manual labor. Luckily, after we got married, they were able to get on Emily's insurance plan and top surgery was approved and will be covered by our insurance.
Our out-of-pocket maximum for our insurance is $6,000. We are anticipating being charged the full amount, though this might (very slowly) decrease as we use our insurance for other types of medical care from January 2021 until our estimated surgery date of May 2021. Any excess that we raise will go towards paying off Nash's current medical debt from extensive and necessary dental work. Nash's minimum recovery time will be 2-4 weeks where they will not be able to continue the work they have been doing. To cover one month of their bills so they can focus on a smooth recovery, we are asking for an additional $2,000. The additional $300 is to account for the cost of legally changing their name.
