Naomi's Fat Chance

Tax deductible
Want to join me in making a difference?

I started running in 2010, after over 2 decades of not thinking I had an athletic bone in my body. Running became my passion as the result of losing 150 lbs & it's been one of the things that's kept me sane over the last 10 years of weight loss maintenance while going after other big goals (like returning to school after being a high school drop out & running my own business).

I tell everyone the first thing you have to have in order to achieve a goal is the BELIEF that you can do it-- that you can show up every day for yourself & put in the effort. Over the years, I've collected achievements that have built my confidence to do hard things, even though I was not raised to believe such a thing.

I've run all kinds of races in the last 10 years & even ran a marathon in 2011 to raise money for cancer research. I haven't raised money for a good cause since then due to feeling let down that not enough people cared to donate. I ended up donating my below minimum wage work-study paycheck to the cause instead. And still, I didn't raise enough.

On September 27, 2019 I will be running my HARDEST RACE EVER & I think it's time to do something to raise money for a good cause again!

The race: Tartarus Backyard Ultra
The course: Camp Seven Mile trails, 4.17 mile loop that starts every hour on the hour. Friday, Sept 27 through ???
The distance: I hope to run at least 12 loops (50 miles). The longest distance I have run prior to this race is 35 miles (8.5 loops). If I surpass the 12 loops, I will continue running with the aid from my crew to keep me going until I cannot run anymore.

This race favors participants with a strong mind over fast running speed. Overcoming a traumatic childhood, losing 150 lbs and keeping most of it off for 10 years, working toward a masters' degree, and running my own business has taken incredible discipline and durable mindset.

In honor of running this incredible race, I'm raising money to benefit A New Way Of Life Reentry Project (Anwol), and any donation will help make an impact! (CLICK HERE TO LEARN ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION )

...Because if circumstances had been only slightly different, I could have been found myself incarcerated too.

Why "Naomi's Fat Chance"?
Because I had a fat chance of making anything out of myself. I only succeeded through the support of others. I had a fat chance of being successful in school after being a high-school drop out, but I finished my last 14 classes with straight A's at a Gonzaga University. I had a fat chance of losing 150 pounds and keeping it off for 10 years when statistically 95% gain all the weight back. I had a fat chance of running a marathon... then I ran 2 of them. And I have a fat chance of running 50 miles during this race, but I am going to try.

Women reentering society after being in prison also have a fat chance of making it unless they have resources that support them every step of the way. Otherwise, they end right back in prison for breaking conditions of their parole. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me!
