Family and Friends

Our mom, Naomi Michaelson was recently diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer. Our mom has and continues to be a health conscious individual and the cancer diagnosis was a shock to her, our family, and friends. We all have been doing our best to process our mom’s diagnosis in a constructive and supportive manner. Cholangiocarcinoma is an aggressive cancer and has a high risk of reoccurrence. After consultation with several oncologists our mom decided to pursue a surgical procedure. A five hour procedure was performed on Tuesday July, 25 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The surgical oncologist removed a tumor he described as the size of a grape fruit, in addition to the entire right side and a portion of the left side of the liver. Doctors have indicated our mom will need to remain in hospital for seven to ten - days and has estimated a two month post-operative recovery.  After the two - month recovery period, chemotherapy will be required. Our mom has maintained a remarkably positive attitude throughout this ordeal. Our mom continues to be a selfless care taker of her family. She consistently puts the needs of her family before her own regardless of the situation. While in the intensive care unit, our mom repeatedly expressed her concern for our wellbeing. Not wanting any family member to worry, she continued to reassure us that she is doing well.

Thus far our mom has been receiving the best care possible. However, the cost in combating our mom’s caner has placed a financial strain on our family. This additional hardship raises concerns in our ability to continue providing our mom with the best care and treatment possible. At this time, our mom is the primary bread winner in the family, as our dad has retired. Her condition and needed treatment requires taking short term disability. As we are a close and supportive family, we are staying with our parents to help our mom as she fights this disease. We continue to support our mom and our family as much as we can emotionally and financially.

At this point our family will need to pay 6,500.00 to cover the initial costs of our mom’s care. We will have continued health expenses as our mom’s condition will require medical tests every three months to monitor any reoccurrence. While there is uncertainty, we are hopeful. Cancer is a scary word and diagnosis, no one is ever really prepared for this, but together we will fight, and be strong with her and for her. Our mom remains in good spirits and is prepared to fight; her strength, resilience and realistic optimism continue to inspire us all. Her warm and kind spirit shines every day and is felt by all those around her. We are very proud of her determination and perseverance during this difficult time. Our mom is the rock in our family, and continues to give her unconditional love and support to her children, family and all those who come into her life.  We hope that you take into consideration what we have shared and join us in being our moms support. Your support will help ease the financial burden faced by this disease and aid in our abilities to help our mom make a full recovery. We thank you for your support in this difficult time and hope to be as strong and positive as our mom continues to be for us.

Thank you in advance,
