Naomi is a 38 year old professional seamstress and amateur artist and is the full-time caregiver for her husband who is disabled. Just a few weeks ago, she went in for an eye exam and found out she has a tumor in her left eye. She had noticed the coloring of her eye had changed and wondered if a spot of color in the iris was getting bigger. But she was more concerned about the blurry vision and pain. But, that “interesting” spot of color was revealed to be a mass.
So, her optometrist referred her to the opthomologist who referred her to Dr. Joffe in Tucson at Retina Specialists of Southern Arizona. Dr. Joffe is an expert in ocular masses The mass was diagnosed as probable carcinoid tumor, which most likely had metastasized from somewhere else in the body. But, carcinoid tumors are usually very hard to detect so she was told she would need every test to trace out every last bit of it.
The Plan
Now, Naomi isn’t one to back off a challenge, and cancer is no exception. So, the tests are underway. Meal planning for organic, wholesome, macro-nutrient filled goodness has already been started. And, we are preparing for a long haul of testing and treatments.
The Tests
As you might expect, tests for difficult to find and hard to diagnose cancers get expensive quick. She set aside a previously unused credit card for the out-of-pocket costs. That is already over $5,000.00. The PET scan was inconclusive so the doctors are recommending a newly FDA approved Gallium 68 PET scan at $6,862.16.
Treatments
We do have some good news though. Part of the reason for the thorough search for tumors is the oncologists felt a biopsy on the eye was risky, but recommended following through with the biopsy consultation before deciding. Naomi went to Dr. Adelberg in Scottsdale for the biopsy consultation, who felt the risk is manageable and arranged a referral to Dr. Char in San Francisco. This is a very rare condition and Dr. Char is a preeminent researcher in ocular cancer, the president of the Tumori foundation and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at University of California San Francisco and Stanford University.
Appreciation
So many have asked what they can do to help. We appreciate how many have helped with meals or have just stopped by to say a kind word. This GoFundMe account is another way to help that is available for any who would like to assist financially.
We will be keeping this GoFundMe account updated as the tests and treatments progress. There is much to say about the kindness of the doctors and interesting details about this rare disorder. So, look for additional posts and check Facebook for updates and links.
