Nancy Velez aka Grancy

My name is Melissa and I am Nancy's only daughter. On October 4th, my mother was diagnosed with  Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). To say that this experience has been life changing is an understatement. The news has hit hard and felt deeply by so many. Here's why- My mom makes a friend everywhere she goes because her smile and kindness is infectious, yes she is that person! She spends all her time, giving back and helping others. At work as a Case Manager in the South Bronx and in her free time, taking care of her elderly mother and "adopted" elderly friend (whom she rescued from financial exploitation and neglect) she is unselfishly and relentlessly working to help and make things easier for others ALL THE TIME. Needless to describe the kind of grandmother she is to my two boys, they adore their Grancy!

Most people like to give all the accolades to those making change or accomplishing things on a grand or public scale. But what about those who touch the lives and open the hearts of every life they encounter just while taking walks and trips to the grocery store.  What about those giving back to impoverished communities on a daily basis? All that to say- my mom is a phenomenal woman, loves hard and gives her all without ever expecting anything in return. She truly deserves the world and if I could, I'd serve her with a gold platter and take over all her burdens on my own, but I can't.

She is the life of any party and brightest light in our family but because of the pandemic and surge in COVID-19 cases again, our extended family and I have not been able to see and care for her the way she has cared for so many.  While her spirits remain very positive, she is experiencing financial hardship due to being out of work and all sick/vacation time depleted. Disability benefits are simply not even enough to cover all essentials like utilities, food, and rent in NYC.

I know that we are all living in unprecedented times and so many are feeling it financially as well, so only if you can, I am asking in the most humblest way for ANY size contribution to help get her through the next year, to when she is cancer free (she WILL beat this) and is able to return to work doing what she loves- helping others. While we cannot be with her physically, I hope that with a little help from family, friends and the community, we can show her that she is not alone and help lift off some of the stress and worry that comes with this financial misfortune.

Lastly, if you can't help financially or want to help another way, please know that with only ONE donation of blood you can save THREE lives and by registering as a bone marrow donor at bethematch.org YOU can be my mothers or someone else's CURE from blood cancer.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my momma, my queen.

With Love and Gratitude, Melissa P.
