Help Na'leb'ak raise $44,784 to educate Maya Q'eqchi' girls and adolescents!

Na'leb'ak's mission is to empower and strengthen the agency of girls, adolescents and young people to make decisions about their lives and their community. The organization works in 27 rural and indigenous communities around Chisec, Alta Verapaz in Guatemala to implement it's Opening Opportunities® Program where groups of girls, adolescents and young people come together to develop their self-esteem and foster leadership.

Only 11 out of the 27 communities Na'leb'ak works with have a middle school and none have a high school in them, leaving adolescent girls with few opportunities to complete 12 years of an education. Additionally, during a 2022 survey, the organization found a total of 1,509 adolescent girls in the communities it operates in were not enrolled in school. The most likely reason for girls not attending school were poverty (30%), not liking or understanding hybrid education due to the COVID-19 pandemic (21%) and early marriage (17%). Systemic issues combined with the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed many adolescent girls into vulnerable situations without the skills or education to support themselves, their families, or communities economically.

Na'leb'ak will support marginalized adolescent girls through workshops where they will learn trades and various skills, helping them to generate income. This education and economic empowerment will make it easier for the girls to fulfill their life goals. The topics of the trainings are selected with the support of the girls and will be carried out regularly over the course of eight months.

In addition, full secondary school scholarships will be provided to select girls. The scholarship awardees will work with a mentor who will monitor the students' performance and also tutor the girls when needed to ensure they will complete the academic year with outstanding performance.

Through this project, Na'leb'ak will reach 64 adolescents and young people in rural communities in Guatemala and their families.

By facilitating access to vocational and secondary education, Na'leb'ak will help adolescents and young people from rural and indigenous communities to meet their goals and live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Adolescent girls who access vocational and secondary education are more likely to delay marriage or their first pregnancy and contribute more to the development of their communities.

Join this movement for girls and adolescents to achieve their autonomy.
