Derick's Road to Independence

Donation protected
On June 23, 2013, my 25 year-old son, Derick, had a terrible accident; he dove into a swimming pool and broke his neck. He suffered a spinal cord injury and is now paralyzed from his chest and down. Derick was a competitive swimmer for years and this is something we never saw coming. While he was fortunate enough escape any brain damage, he did lose the ability to move his legs, core, and fingers. Derick now lives his life in a wheelchair. For those of you who knew him before the accident, you know that this is incredibly hard for him. Derick is a hard worker. He is a hands-on person who enjoyed building things, driving his truck, riding his four-wheeler, and going to work to provide for him and his wife. Now, Derick is now confined to a chair and is really missing his independence because this injury has robbed him of the ability to do some simple daily tasks as well as many of the things he loves. Things can be adapted to work for him. The key to this life is accessibility, and that is why we need your help.

Derick has made significant progress with his strength since the injury. He exercises at a wheelchair accessible gym, and has even made it back into the water to for aqua therapy. Derick’s biggest goal after suffering this injury is to gain back his independence. He has worked hard and is now able to stay home alone while his wife is at work.

What he needs now is to achieve the next level of independence and it is incredibly expensive. We are asking for donations to help him reach his goal. Now, Derick must depend on others for transportation, his truck needs to be modified so that he can drive again. He wants to go back to work to provide for his wife, and possible future children. Derick would also like to gain more independence at home, which will require more in home accessibility. The only bathroom has a shower/tub combination that needs to be modified so that Derick can shower independently.

With your assistance, we can make this happen. As a mother, you want the very best the world can offer to your children and I want to make that happen for my son. I can’t afford this all on my own, we are asking for help from others. Please know that any donation will be greatly appreciated, and put to great use to foster his independence through a better, more accessible life.
