Luis Silva, 34 years old, is diagnosed with ADEM – Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, a rare inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. He also has a 6 year old daughter with autism who requires a lot of care and attention, spreading the family's already thin resources. Due to lack of insurance and financial means, the family is seeking financial help to acquire intense rehabilitative services. The family is very humbled by everyone’s generosity to help with the medical bills and services in this difficult time. Thank you for your support.
ADEM is sometimes difficult to distinguish from multiple sclerosis (MS) because the symptoms are common to both "demyelinating" disorders include loss of vision, weakness, numbness and loss of balance. Both ADEM and MS involve immune-mediated responses to myelin in the brain and spinal cord.
He is in desperate need for intense rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, swallowing and speech therapy. Unable to acquire these services in the US, the family was forced to send him to Brazil, where now he receives the long awaited therapies alongside medications that were not offered previously.
We established this fund for those who are able to contribute to Luis' needs while the family gets through this prolonged medical crisis. Thank you very much for the support.
Luis Silva, 34 anos de idade, foi diagnosticado com Síndrome de Adem - Encefalomielite disseminada aguda, uma doença rara e grave, onde acontece a inflamação do cérebro com perda da mielina, responsável pela propagação dos impulsos nervosos. Ele tem uma filha de 06 anos de idade com autismo e seus familiares contam com a generosidade de todos para ajuda com as despesas hospitalares neste momento difícil.
A ADEM é considerada como uma variante da esclerose múltipla. Ambas são doenças desmielinizantes, ou seja, doenças do sistema nervoso com síntomas muito similares incluindo perda da visão, enfraquecimento muscular, entorpecimento e perda de equilíbrio. Tanto a ADEM como a esclerose múltipla envolvem respostas imunes mediadas do cérebro e da medula espinhal. Ele precisa de reabilitação e fisioterapia.
