On Saturday, February 21st their world was rocked when Neal (aged 42) suffered a ruptured carotid aneurysm which led to a hemorrhagic stroke. Neal is in the Neuroscience ICU at UNC Hospital. The next 14-21 days will be critical for Neal since he is currently experiencing a complication known as vaso spasms. The fantastic team in the ICU is working diligently to try and prevent further ischemic strokes.
We don't know the extent of the brain injury at this time since Neal is heavily sedated, on a ventilator and unable to follow commands. It is undetermined when we can expect Neal to recover. His prognosis is guarded at this time and he is fighting for his life. It is unclear if or when he will be able to return to work. We will know more as each day passes.
As in any family the financial impact of this situation is devastating. Melissa, Neal and the kids are fortunate to have so many caring friends who are helping in many ways (providing meals, watching the kids, chores, transportation for the kids, staying at the hospital for hours, etc.) and Melissa is very grateful. Melissa is taking family medical leave in order to be there for Neal and the kids during this difficult time. It is clear that this family will need additional help.
For those of you who have asked what you can do to help-we have set up this page to assist Melissa financially.
Thank you all for the love and support you have shown.
