North Valleys High School is a traditional four-year institution situated in a relatively rural section of Reno, NV, serving over 2000 students. The social and economic adversity our students have faced over the last decade is tremendous, from the impacts of the recent recession to our current housing shortage which is creating surging rents and housing costs throughout our city. Additionally, we face one of the nation’s highest rates of poverty, drug use, teen pregnancy, and suicide.
And through it all, our Panthers prevail. They want to do better. They want to have a chance at life. They want to matter. And they happen to be some of the most extraordinary individuals you will ever know. They manage to excel despite constant budget cuts in a state with one of the lowest per-pupil funding. Why? Because they have something to prove. Every time someone tells them they aren’t good enough, they work harder. When judged as the school that can’t achieve, they prove everyone wrong. Our students continue to enroll in AP classes and take the most rigorous courses available to them. They volunteer to clean up their local parks; they tutor younger kids; they get jobs to help out at home; they take care of their younger siblings so their parents can work a second job. They are absolutely remarkable, and given the opportunity, we truly believe they can change the world.
The staff at North Valleys and several local community members work tirelessly to raise money for scholarships for our at-risk scholars in order for them to build better lives for themselves. We try to generate money through craft fairs, lip sync contests, and faculty plays. Despite our best efforts, we rank last in our district for scholarship funding. When we reach out to local businesses for contributions, too often their response is that they already give money to other high schools, reinforcing the implication that our kids don’t matter as much as the others in our community.
