Dear Ones,

Greetings to all our good friends and families.  I’ve been told to keep this initial entry “short & sweet” but I feel I must catch up with more detail, so bear with me!

By now, many of you know that Myrna has a brain mass that’s needing surgery. We are very fortunate to have you all to lean on.  We are certain our Lord has her in His hands and we trust He has a purpose in this journey.  Myrna has been challenged before with a major health crisis and we saw God’s glory in it then when she survived breast cancer 33 years ago.  Beyond our families and a small town core of devout friends, we did not yet know many of you at that time.  We feel extremely blessed to have such a huge support group now!  We have our joined growing families, blessed with our two daughters, sons-in-law, their families, dear church families and so many friendships along the way, as we’ve moved about.

We’ve had opportunities these recent days to share details, but many others are curious about what’s been going on with Myrna and where we are expecting to go from this day forward. Here’s a time-line of what’s been happening.

Sept 29-30: Onset of symptoms and concerns with numbness of lower lip and tip of tongue. Detecting high blood pressure, Jay, a long-time nursing friend, encouraged Myrna to seek further advise.

Oct 1: During a shift in the ER, Myrna continued experiencing “mini-stroke” TIA symptoms. She was closely monitored with her fellow nurses.

Oct 2: Our family doctor had Myrna come in immediately, as she was experiencing spiked high blood pressure. Labs were drawn and MRI ordered.

Oct 6: MRI w/contrast done. New blood pressure meds had been prescribed and were beginning to show good affect.

Oct 7: Doctor shared results of MRI by radiologist’s reporting of a 4 cm x 2.5 cm central tumor. At this point, it can only be identified as a Cavernous Sinus Mass and is unknown as malignant or benign. The biggest risk is that the mass is wrapped around Myrna’s Carotid artery.

Oct 8: With much thankful assistance from our good friends, Corky and Laurie, Myrna was able to get in immediately with one of KU Med’s top neurosurgeons.

Oct 9: Met with neurosurgeon at KU to review potential procedures and preliminary schedule. At this point, we’re looking at surgery end of the month, first week of Nov. at the latest. We’re told to expect Myrna spending 2 days in ICU, remainder of the week in recovery and 3-4 weeks in rehab.

Oct 16: CT Scan is scheduled for tomorrow to attempt further discovery of the vascular condition of the mass.

Oct 20: Hearing test and appt with one of KU’s ENT surgeons, who will determine access to the tumor, partnering with the neurosurgeon.  A pathology team will be attending to analyze the mass as soon as a biopsy is taken.  The team will then have to determine what actions to take for completing the operation. Please pray the mass is not attaching to her carotid artery and allow for complete removal.

Beyond these events, we wait with some anxiety.  Myrna has to take it easy and keep stress down.  She’s still a high risk for stroke and finds her blood pressure goes up when she’s at rest.  We set her alarm for 3 am and walk around a bit to bring it down.  Great news though, Myrna has not been experiencing the facial problems and headaches the last couple of days!

So folks, please be in prayer for our Myrna and we’ll continue to update through this app.  She wants to share her current favorite verse with you from Jeremiah 29:11-13.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord.  “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

There will be great expenses for Myrna and her husband Russ during this time as lost wages, cost of living, healthcare bills, etc. are slowly mounting.   The last thing that we want for them is to stress about finances during this time that should be focused on healing and prayer.  Please join in the fund for Myrna's healing with whatever you can donate and feel in your hearts to share as her and her husband have been angels to so many here on earth.

With Light and Love,
