Muslimah Youth is a non-profit organization based in The Bronx, New York; a low income, poor, disadvantaged community. We offer a safe haven to -but not limited to - young Muslim women and girls where we educate, empower, and counsel them. We aim to educate our young members about their religion, their rights, and roles as Muslim women and to be a part of the American society - all so they can grow to be proud Muslim women and confident of their identity. Though we are based in The South Bronx community, we are welcoming to all and promote diversity.
Part of our mission is to counsel our members through the issues they face, assist them in academic and career decision-making, and expand their resources and opportunities. We hope that in doing so, we are able to raise influential, productive leaders of the next generation that will impact the community and contribute to its establishment.
MUSLIMAH YOUTH also stands as an advocate for its members. We conduct and send out letters to schools requesting for Muslim students to pray during school hours and exempt them from physical activity while fasting in the month of Ramadan. Additionally, we send out letters for any religious request or concern a student may have.
We also host biweekly sessions at a local mosque as an educational, advising, and bonding platform. We educate our members of their identity to rid misconceptions, increase understanding, so they may embrace who they are. At the conclusion of every session, a fresh warm meal is served along with refreshments. We wish to increase our services and activities once we have adequate funds. A few programs we wish to provide are:
Workshops
Youth Iftaar Dinner in Ramadan
Eid banquet
2 or more field trips
Community service (visiting the ill, feeding the poor, etc.)
There are many more activities and resources we would like to offer to the community, but we are trying to expand and increase our resources gradually, based on what we can afford.
We are now establishing and we are in need of your help! By the mercy of Allah, we’ve received some donations for our organization as a whole to cover expenses as well as generous donations for our first MY Iftaar Dinner that we hosted on Monday, June 4th, 2018 - alhamdulillah.
Your contributions would go towards lost of good such as:
Preparing food for our biweekly sessions
Event preparation
Office equipment (projector, document printing, etc.)
MY ABSSADOR uniforms
Legalizing the organization
And many more!
WHY MY IS IMPORTANT
MUSLIMAH YOUTH is proud to be the first organization within the area for young Muslim women and girls. We began with women who have been raised in the community but due to the lack of resources available, they had to travel long distances and be a part of other well established communities that offered plenty of resources; especially for the youth. After going through that hardship, we acknowledged that we did not want the younger generation to go through the same, so MY was established to provide these options for the youth in their community without them having to travel.
In this very community, majority of parents of the youth are immigrants that have arrived a decade or a little more ago. Coming from a poor, underdeveloped homeland, many were not educated and as they arrived to this country, they’ve only been able to work low-wage, high-labor jobs. As a result, they do not have much time to tend to their children emotionally, leaving the children alone. Due to the lack of resources available in the community, many children associate themselves with poison-like peers and as a result, they loose their faith and morals. Nonetheless, when these children are going through problems at school and home that lead to depression, they have no one to counsel them in the right manner, so they seek counsel from individuals that would give them advice that may weaken their faith.
We are here to address matters that are ignored due to cultural taboos and religious misconceptions. We are here to rid of religious manipulation. We are here to improve our community and raise educated, strong, powerful women of the future! We are MUSLIMAH YOUTH!
